Witnessing Strength and Resilience at SOS Village

Part 2: Witnessing Strength and Resilience at SOS Village

On Monday, our mission took two paths. The medical team headed to the main hospital, where Dr. AA performed two life-changing surgeries, assisted by Dr. KO. Meanwhile, the rest of us visited the SOS Village Orphanage.

We were met by Miss D, a dedicated social worker who walked us through the realities of the facility. The orphanage was more than just a home for abandoned children—it served as a refuge for elderly patients requiring respite care, young mothers facing stigma, and juvenile girls with nowhere else to go. Without adequate government-run rehabilitation centres, these young girls found themselves housed here instead of prison.

The challenges were immense. The centre relied heavily on NGO support and private donations to provide for its many residents. Seeing the work they were doing with so little was both heartbreaking and inspiring. We sat with Miss D and one of the nurses to discuss the needs of the centre—watch the full interview here.
