Series: Giving Back in The Gambia – My reflections Ayobolami

Medical and Welfare Outreach in Gunjur

Thursday took us on a journey outside Bakau to Gunjur Health Centre, about an hour away. The moment we arrived, it was clear they had been eagerly awaiting us.

Service Stations

  • Registration and Vitals: Nurses and healthcare assistants assessed patients before referring them to specialists.
  • Medical Consultation: General practitioners and psychiatrists attended to patients, offering referrals where necessary.
  • Pharmacy & Lab: Medications were provided in collaboration with the Department of Health, and blood tests were conducted on-site.
  • Dental & Vision Care: Dentists and optometrists examined patients, with many receiving prescription glasses on the spot.

Impact

By the end of the day, over 100 patients—including children and elderly individuals—had received care. The sheer gratitude in their eyes made every effort worthwhile.

Final Reflections

This trip was more than just a mission—it was a lesson in faith, service, and the impact of collective effort. Whether through medical aid, empowerment sessions, or simply listening to people’s stories, every moment carried meaning.

If there’s one takeaway from this experience, it’s that giving back isn’t about grand gestures—it’s about showing up, using what’s in your hands, and making a difference in any way you can.
